This week in EYFS.....

Juniper Class
During our reading sessions, we have been using colourful semantics and our knowledge of symbol matching to enable us to complete some short sentences from our key text - Oi Frog!
During Maths sessions, we are using a five frame and Numicon pegs to not only count, but to also sort the pegs by colour. This opens up opportunities to talk about more/less, one/lots and same/different.
What is Numicon?
Numicon is a visual, multi-sensory approach to teaching numbers and mathematical concepts. Using brightly coloured, shaped pieces that represent numbers, children can physically manipulate these "Numicon shapes" to understand how numbers fit together. The shapes represent numbers in a tactile way, with each piece corresponding to a specific value. For example, the number 1 is represented by a small peg, while 10 is represented by a larger shape with 10 pegs.
How Does Numicon Help?
-
Visual Learning: The shapes give our learners a clear visual representation of numbers, which helps strengthen their understanding of how numbers relate to one another.
-
Hands-on Learning: By physically manipulating the Numicon pieces, our learners experience a more interactive learning environment. This hands-on approach is perfect for young children or those who benefit from a more kinesthetic method.
-
Concept Understanding: Whether it's addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division, Numicon helps break down complex math concepts into easily understandable, tangible steps.
-
Building Confidence: As children use Numicon, they gain confidence in their ability to solve problems, which leads to a more positive relationship with maths overall.
Oak Class
In Creative Arts and Design, we made butterfly prints for Easter and the Spring show.
In PE, we are working on our climbing skills as well as balancing. We were able to independently walk across the beam showing off our great balancing skills.
In Literacy, We have been reading the story: The Rhyming Rabbit and learners have enjoyed listening to the story as well as reading it with the support of colourful semantics.
In Maths, we have been working on our counting skills and matching numerals to quantity. We enjoyed building towers using Numicon and pegs, counting as we added the pegs to the Numicon holes, and we enjoyed exploring a maths game on the IWB.
In our Attention Autism session, we did a fun experiment of adding food colouring shapes to milk and watching as they dispersed the colours into the milk, creating a marble effect.
During phonics, we explored transport sounds, and we enjoyed filling a tuff tray with different signs, vehicles and sound buttons.
